This online workshop runs 10am – 4pm.

Content Summary:

Nearly all children will show aggressive behaviour at some point and this is an expected part of childhood development.  This workshop is for everyone who comes into contact with children and young people who wants to better identify and effectively respond to anger dysregulation and aggressive behaviours.  Attendees will learn about the various types of aggressive behaviour, their causes and development from infancy through to adolescence.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of anger dysregulation and how this is a common trigger to aggressive behaviours.  We all feel angry at times; there are also times when anger acts as a shield to protect the feelings that lie beneath.  Assessing anger can be complicated and when working with children, we need to remain curious as to what the more vulnerable emotions underneath might be and consider the wider contextual factors.  We will be exploring ways in which we can better understand what such aggressive behaviours might be communicating.

The last part of the workshop will offer practical advice and clinical tools to support professionals in how they work with anger in children and young people.  We will talk about interventions from a CBT perspective including arousal reduction techniques (breathing, muscle relaxation and imagery), cognitive restructuring and the use of role play to build on behavioural coping skills.
