There is no such thing as a child: the importance of systemic working to support children engaged in one to one therapy.

Course Overview

For child therapists providing invaluable support in one-to-one work with children, the prospect of engaging with parents can be challenging. This course supports attendees to consider how they can effectively engage parents to support the progress of the child’s therapy and development of wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

In this course you will learn:

  • Why it is important to work systemically when seeing children for counselling or psychotherapy
  • How to invite parents to engage in meetings with you in order to help them to understand the importance and value of their involvement
  • Managing issues around the child’s confidentiality
  • Talking to parents about their child’s experiences and difficulties
  • How to work with parents outside of the direct work with the child to optimise the child’s move towards emotional wellbeing
  • For therapists who wish to involve parents in sessions with the child, how to assess the emotional safety of this for the child

About Christina:

Over the past 16 years, Christina has worked as a psychotherapist with children, adolescents, birth parents, foster carers and adoptive parents. Her special interest is in early childhood development and the impact of trauma on a child’s developing capacities, functioning and behaviour. From her experience working with children who have endured developmental trauma characterised by neglect and abuse, she has found it necessary to use a comprehensive integrated approach in order to address the multiple complexities which such children present with.

Christina returned to live in Ireland in 2016 and currently works as a Developmental Trauma and Attachment specialist providing training, assessment and clinical interventions on behalf of Tusla Child and Family Agency and in independent practice with birth and adoptive families as well as training, consultancy and clinical supervision in the UK.
