Cath Knibbs: Exploring Inappropriate Content – A CPD Day for Practitioners Supporting Children Who Have Viewed Pornography

Introduction

One in ten UK children have viewed pornography by the age of 9. Over a quarter have viewed it by the age of 11 and over 50% have viewed by the time they are 13. (Children’s Commissioner’s Report : 31st January 2023).

What are the real impacts of this on children and young people – at the time of viewing, as they grow up and for their relationships in the future? This essential CPD day has been specially designed for therapeutic practitioners and offers practical support and research-backed findings to help you support children and young people who may be exposed to – accidentally or intentionally – inappropriate adult material.

Our presenter is Cath Knibbs, an experienced child and adolescent therapist and an expert in a wide range of topics that fall within the increasingly impactful areas of online safeguarding of children and young people, and Cybertrauma – the range of harms that can occur when interacting with online spaces and social media.

Although this is a challenging and emotive subject area, this will be an informative and supportive day that will be safely contained and held. No distressing images or content will be shared, and support will be available if required.

Content Summary from Cath:

The day will consist of:

  • Definitions and descriptions of the issue, for example why do we use the term ‘viewing’ and not ‘consumption’ or  ‘use of ‘?
  • A consideration of the research undertaken around pornography and the impacts of  the viewing of this material
  • The differences between legal and illegal material and why this is necessary to understand
  • Ways to work therapeutically with and around this issue with children and young people
  • What to ask or not to ask and why
  • Ways to work with the requests of parents & carers and consideration of their wants / needs for their children around this issue
  • What do in terms of safeguarding referrals and what routes are in existence with digital safety act (new law)
  • What to do in school settings versus private practice

There will be discussion groups and tasks included throughout the day.
