Kerrie Hipgrave

About Kerrie

I am a Psychotherapist who specialises in Tourette's Syndrome, Tics, Trichotillomania, Dermatillomania and OCD. I work online with CBiT Therapy (Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics). It is not a cure, but it is the UK's front line approach that changes lives. Using Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) you can learn to take control of your tics and let go of the stigma and shame of ticcing leading to positive emotional, psychological and physical change.

Further information

I work online enabling me to offer specialist support nationally and abroad with Tourette's Syndrome, Tics, OCD, Trichotillomania and Dermatillomania.

My humanistic approach offering understanding, empathy and compassion to each client underpins the behavioural therapy to address the complexity of neurodiversity and presenting issues.

Each client is assessed in the consultation appointment lasting 1.5 hours. Therapy offers a safe space to listen, connect, gather and formulate information and to administer formal assessments. Depending on the age and wishes of the child/young person, we can work together (parent/child/therapist) to psychoeducate and begin the process of positive change.

When working with children below12yrs in CBiT therapy, the parent/guardian is included in the therapy for reassurance and to be psychoeducated together unless the child expresses a strong desire to work alone. Teenagers often prefer to work alone with the adult joining the session at the end for a summary and guidance on how to support the teenager with focussed daily practice.

All therapy is confidential and boundaried. Sessions are weekly for 50 minutes and there is daily focussed practice and short videoing. It is essential that the client/young person is committed to these homework tasks as they support and accelerate a positive outcome.

Therapy is dependent on two things - that the client wants to commit and change and that the client likes the therapist so that a trusting therapeutic relationship can develop.

I am passionate about my work in providing the tools for change that changes lives. Please contact me directly to discuss your situation and to ascertain whether I am the right therapist for you with a view to arranging a consultation appointment.

A Mother’s Testimonial

"We contacted Safe Talk Counselling at the start of the Covid pandemic lockdown in February 2021. My 10 year old daughter had an explosion of both motor and vocal tics brought on by the pandemic through anxiety due to loss of schooling, friends, extended family, but mostly by loss of her routine.

Kerrie was and is a brilliant Therapist. She really helped not only my daughter, but also myself to understand tics and what was happening to my daughter.

The various suppression techniques and breathing tasks (ERP) really helped take control of her tics. Kerrie showed and explained things to us we never would have known nor recognised.

We would try to make the practice times fun for my daughter and she and I had good days and bad days, but she kept going and finally turned a corner. Her progress and change was incredible.

I kept the very first few videos and when I look at them now, I am amazed by my daughter’s change. I would highly recommend Kerrie and CBiT therapy."
