A Half Day with Nerissa McDonald
Join Nerissa for this essential and important workshop exploring Black trauma and the various ways it may present in therapy. This is one of a series of Anti-Racism trainings Nerissa is running with The Sunflower Network across 2022 which can be attended individually, as a selection or as the full series of trainings.
Black trauma is always present in the therapy room, but how do we as professionals work sensitively with what is present in the room? This racial trauma is experienced by all people of colour, both individually and collectively, which is best described as a condition known as Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS). In this interactive half day training we will look at the lasting effects that slavery has had on the black community and how that affects how our clients show up in therapy.
Participants will gain an understanding in the following:
- Behaviours and language that are communicated in sessions with clients
- Behaviours and language that are communicated in meetings with parents/carers
- How schools, staff members and other agencies working with the families relate to the client and their family.
Through discussions in breakout rooms, sharing and reflection, we will think together how best to sensitively support our black clients and their families.
Descriptions of trainings have purposefully been kept brief. The training style will be varied and interactive. There will be handouts provided and recommended reading suggestions.
Self Care Notice:
Please note that this training is very emotive and deals with complex issues around race and racism. It is strongly advised that participants have a friend or partner on standby to share their thoughts and feelings with after the training. Doing something that you enjoy after the training is highly recommended too.
There will be handouts provided and recommended reading suggestions.

Nerissa is a Black Integrative Child and Adolescent psychotherapist. Nerissa has a BA in Music Industry Management and Marketing, an MA in Integrative Child Psychotherapy which she gained at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) and is also a Certified Cyber Therapist. She is a registered member of BACP and a UKCP accredited Child and Adolescent psychotherapist.
As a Black woman in the UK, Nerissa is well versed to Racism. Her first racial experience was as a young child. Now as an adult the racial injustices continues. Nerissa is a mother to two small children and works as a therapist in a Primary school in Islington. Nerissa first started her career working in the music industry. Her dream as a child was to either become an Artist or to discover artists and help them to flourish and live their dream. An unexpected change came along when she saw an advert for a job in a Children’s centre. The rest as they say is history.
After graduating, Nerissa knew as a Black therapist she would need to develop and learn new skills to further help her clients especially those who identify as Black. Noticing themes of racism, oppression, isolation and hopelessness, Nerissa has been trying to find ways to support and give a voice to the feelings that for some have been suppressed. Nerissa went on to train as a Master in challenging racism in therapeutic practice and black issues with Dr. Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga who is a retired transcultural psychotherapist, author, lecturer, trainer and supervisor. Working alongside Isha and learning about her work as a therapist has provided concepts and offered the language to help Nerissa further understand the work she has been doing with the children and families she works with.
Having been awakened and inspired, Nerissa has vowed to help continue the legacy of Isha’s work by helping other therapists of all backgrounds reflect on their work with Black children and families. Nerissa’s desire to support people and inspire them to free their minds and open their hearts has motivated her to become the founder of Awakening Our Roots.
