Learning to Engage Children & Young People with Challenges in Relating, Regulating & Reflecting

A Day with Dan Hughes*

A very special opportunity to spend time learning directly from the wonderful Dan Hughes who will be talking us through a range of theory and principles, as well as offering up practical and creative ways to communicate, support and engage with both children & caregivers through the use of interventions and of course employing the fantastic PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity & Empathy).

*Part of our 25 for £25 initiative – see below for details.

Content Summary:

Part One:

The Presentation of Theory & Principles

  • The centrality of attachment relationships in all aspects of childhood development
  • How trauma and family dysfunction undermine the developmental tasks of learning to engage in reciprocal relationships, regulate internal states and reflect on the inner lives of themselves and others
  • The experiential process of relating that facilitates these three developmental skills
  • A relational framework for guiding and teaching children & young people (PACE).

Part Two:

Application of Core Principles & Interventions

  • Developing & Maintaining the child’s ability to regulate their affective / cognitive and behavioural states ; Adult Self Regulation – Co-regualtion – Child Self-Regulation
  • Establishing trust through the intersubjective nature of the caregiver-child relationship
  • Co-creating new meanings for the child at home and in school – developing meanings that anticipate success, not failure
  • PACE in action : Engaging the child’s mind and heart while addressing their behaviour.
