A Three Hour Webinar

Join Christina for this online workshop focusing on understanding and helping children and young people who experience suicidal ideation and who use self-harm to cope with difficult feelings and experiences.

Course Outline

Children and Adolescents who present with self-harming behaviour and suicidal ideation naturally create high levels of concern for the adults who support them. Developing an understanding of the roots of these behaviours is crucial if practitioners are going to be of help to the child. This course is designed to help practitioners to make sense of the distressed and distressing feelings and behaviours experienced by children and adolescents who self-harm. We will focus on how to foster connected relationships in order to help such children and adolescents develop sufficient trust to use others for help and support as well as learning healthier ways of expressing their difficult feelings and to better regulate themselves emotionally.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this training participants can:

  • Learn about current understanding around the underlying causes of suicidal ideation and self-harm in children and adolescents
  • Explore how Polyvagal Theory helps to inform our work with distressed children and adolescents, using concepts such as therapeutic presence, the social engagement system, neuroception of safety and co-regulation
  • Understand the importance of countertransference in informing our work with distressed children and adolescents
  • Consider how to approach conversations with a child or young person about suicidal ideation, self-harm and their complex feelings
  • Learn about the assessment of risk and the use of safety plans to support a young person who is self-harming
  • Understand how to best support a child or adolescent who is at risk of suicide or self-harming, helping to develop more healthy coping and resilience
  • Approaches to help a child/adolescent to develop resources for self-support to draw from when in a distressed/dysregulated state

We will also consider the role of self-care and reflective practice for practitioners who are supporting highly distressed and at-risk children.

Self Care Notice:

Please note this training works with complex and emotive topics around suicide, suicidal ideation, trauma and self harm that may also be deeply personal for delegates, depending on their lived experience. There will be a break included on the day and one to one support will be available if needed, but please do reflect on whether you feel able to attend – your safety and well being is of paramount importance.
