Content Summary:

Grief is a name for a collection of feelings we feel at certain moments in life, when things don’t go our way, when we lose things or people we love, when we are faced with the damage we are doing collectively to ourselves and to Mother Earth. Children and young people experience grief, but they are rarely supported to have a healthy and healing experience of grief, especially in modern Western culture. Sadly, we live in a society that still pathologises grief. There is very little general awareness of the different ways in which unresolved grief can manifest. For example, 25% of under 20 year olds in the UK who take their own lives have experienced a childhood bereavement, whilst 41% of young offenders in the UK have lost a parent. If we can help children and young people to have a healthy experience of grief, we given them a chance of a better life.

In this workshop, Louis will be exploring the different ways in which children grieve and how we can best help them to grieve in a healthy way. Louis will be sharing examples of best practice, and pitfalls, from his work in a hospice, as well as the work done through his charity Apart of Me – that helps children through loss and trauma. You will learn how to help heal unresolved grief in parents and carers. You will learn about the different types of grief, with a particular focus on grief for social and environmental issues, which is a growing phenomenon in our interconnected age. You will learn about the factors that can lead to grief becoming complicated or traumatic and how we can help in these circumstances. Louis will share his learnings from different cultural and indigenous perspectives on grief and we will explore why relationship and community is so important to the grief process.
